Bangladesh Seeks Stronger Cooperation with Türkiye on Climate and Development

Bangladesh has emphasized strengthening bilateral cooperation with Türkiye to address the adverse impacts of global climate change and achieve sustainable development goals. The diplomatic initiative comes as the two countries prepare for their participation in the upcoming international climate conference.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development in an official press release on Monday (October 19). Earlier, Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Ramis Sen paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at her office in Dhaka, where they held discussions on bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation.

During the meeting, the Turkish ambassador briefed the state minister on preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from November 9 to 20.

He also provided details of the high-level World Climate Summit, scheduled for November 11 and 12, which will bring together world leaders, and discussed Bangladesh’s participation in the event.

The state minister congratulated Türkiye on hosting COP31 and formally confirmed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would personally attend the important global climate conference.

She expressed hope that the conference would provide an opportunity for a formal bilateral meeting between the top political leaders of Bangladesh and Türkiye.

The state minister stressed that strengthening bilateral technical and policy cooperation has become increasingly important to address the adverse effects of climate change and accelerate the implementation of environmentally sustainable development projects amid the current global challenges.
