M Rezaul Islam- Due to the continuous rains of several days and the hill slopes coming down from the upstream, the water of Atrai and Fakinni rivers is increasing in Naogaon Manda. Currently, the water of these two rivers is touching the border. Several areas have already become vulnerable.
Talking to the riverside residents, it is known that some embankments that were broken in last year’s floods have not been repaired. Two embankment sites in North Nurullabad and Chakrampur areas, which were breached in the severe floods of 2017, are still unprotected. If the water of the river crosses the boundary, the water will easily enter the locality through these broken places. At least 1,000 families will be waterlogged.
Meanwhile, as the water level of Atrai and Fakinni rivers is rising, the local member of Parliament SM Brahani Sultan Mamud Gama visited the vulnerable areas of the two rivers today on Thursday.
Upazila Vice Chairman Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Rezaul Karim, General Secretary of Upazila Volunteer League Nausad Ali and other leaders and activists of various levels were present.
Local residents say that if the water exceeds the danger limit, at least 30 points of flood control dams on both banks of these two rivers will become vulnerable. Flood proneness will be reduced to a great extent if these vulnerable areas are rehabilitated before the water crosses the danger line. Then the riverside people will not have to spend sleepless nights. Flood control dams do not have to be guarded.
When asked about this, the local member of parliament SM Brahani Sultan Mamud Gama said that all kinds of preparations have been made in advance to deal with the flood. Naogaon Water Development Board has been directed to work on the vulnerable points of the flood control dam.
MP Gama also said that the Upazila Project Implementation Office is working alongside the town to deal with the flood. The chairman and members of the concerned union council have also been instructed to be vigilant.
