Interim government chief advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said that the pace of reforms will determine how soon Bangladesh can go to elections.
He made this comment in an interview given to the news agency AFP on the sidelines of the COP-29 conference in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on Wednesday (November 13).
Dr. Yunus said, after the fall of the dictatorial government, important reforms of the state including the electoral system of Bangladesh should be done. Then the election will be given. Elections depend on the pace of reforms.
The chief adviser added that all of the country should be united in these constitutional reforms. So that the government, parliament, election rules can be agreed upon. These must be finished very quickly.
Asked how long the term of the interim government will be, he said, “We are in the interim government.” So the shorter our tenure, the better. We want to hold elections soon.
Emphasizing on taking the country towards democratic elections, he said, after assuming responsibility in the government, we promised to prepare the country for elections. As soon as the preparations are over, elections will be held and the chosen people will be able to rule the country.
Meanwhile, Dr. about instability in various sectors of Bangladesh. Yunus said, any government will be concerned about this. He also has a government. “We hope to resolve this and maintain a peaceful law and order environment,” he told AFP.
He also reminded that there was a popular uprising in Bangladesh just three months ago.
It is to be noted that the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign in the face of the popular uprising of students in July and August. He resigned and left the country on August 5. After that, an interim government was formed in the country. Dr. Muhammad Yunus is the chief advisor of this government.
