BNP Standing Committee member Babu Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said, “This government’s responsibility is to hold an election. They are neither in the election nor in running the country. All I am hearing from morning to evening is reform and reform.”
He made these remarks while addressing a public meeting organized by the Lalmonirhat Railway Mukta Mancha on Wednesday (February 12) afternoon, demanding that the price hike of essential commodities be kept tolerable, the deteriorating law and order situation improved, a roadmap for a speedy transition to a democratic path be announced, and the various conspiracies of fallen fascism be confronted.
Gayeshwar Chandra said, “The current price of commodities is unbridled, but those who produce do not get a fair price. The syndicate of the market system still exists. We do not see this syndicate as being completely eradicated.”
He further said, the movement has been a one-off, the fall of fascism. Why? A fair and free election. I will give my vote to whoever I want. What have we been protesting for these 16 years? Why so many martyrs? Why did we have to sacrifice so many lives? We do not back down from anything, be it imprisonment or oppression. There was a conspiracy to eliminate BNP, but on the contrary, BNP has become stronger.
He further said, on the issue of democracy, our uncompromising leader Khaleda Zia did not compromise in the interest of the country. She too has been a victim of various oppressions and tortures. Khaleda Zia is not limited to BNP politics, she is doing politics in harmony with 180 million people. Many cannot tolerate that if elections are held, BNP will come to power. Who will come then? Those who are against the Liberation War? Those who are dictators like Sheikh Hasina? BNP will come to power. We have also proposed reforms. We have made demands time and again at different times. You are wise people, we are less wise people. We walk with the people, mix with the people. We want fair and free elections. We want votes as soon as possible.
Babu Gayeshwar said, “You advisors will not be in the government, hold secret meetings at night and give birth to various children. You are losing your impartiality. Why is this happening? There must be a conspiracy here. You work positively. Vote. You will be written in history.”
The public meeting was presided over by Asadul Habib Dulu, Organizing Secretary of the National Executive Committee and President of Lalmonirhat District BNP, and special guests included Professor Aminul Islam, Co-Organizing Secretary of the Rangpur Divisional National Executive Committee, Abdul Khalek, and leaders of various organizations including BNP, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal from the district and various upazilas.
