On Tuesday, the hanging bodies of a housewife named Antara Majhi (23) and a man named Abdur Rashid Molla (37) were recovered from a cowshed in Saraswatipur village of Tilakpur union of the upazila. The deceased are Antara Majhi, wife of Mainul Islam of Saraswatipur village, and Abdur Rashid Molla, son of the deceased Abdul Kader Molla of Ambari Paschim Para village.
Police and locals said that five years ago, Antara, the daughter of Ujjal Majhi of Shimulia village in Atrai upazila of Naogaon, was married to Mainul of Saraswatipur village. Since the marriage, there had been a dispute with his wife over dowry. Recently, Mainul was preparing to go abroad in the hope of a better life. The need for money in this matter was the reason why his wife was pressuring her in-laws for money. There had been a dispute between the husband and wife for the last few days regarding the matter. Meanwhile, late on Monday night, when the husband Mainul returned home, he saw her hanging in the cowshed with a veil wrapped around her neck and started screaming. When the locals came forward that night, they informed the police. On receiving the information, the police recovered the body on Tuesday morning and sent it to the morgue for an autopsy.
Babli Akhter, the mother of the deceased Antara, said, “Since the marriage, my son-in-law Mainul used to physically torture my daughter. He used to beat her for various reasons without any reason.” Last year, my daughter was beaten up by a pervert while she was pregnant and also destroyed her unborn child. My daughter did not commit suicide. Her feet were stuck to the ground up to her knees. She was killed in a planned manner for dowry money. I want justice for the murder of my daughter.
Antara’s husband Mainul Islam said, Antara could not be found at home in the morning. At one stage, she was found hanging by a noose in the cowshed and screamed, so the locals and the police came and took her down. There was no dispute between us.
