Neon dulal, Lalmonirhat- Millions of voices have one demand – save Teesta. I want my share of water, I want the implementation of mega projects – this was the speech of everyone who came to the seminar and rally of the two-day continuous sit-in program. And the common people, who have come to stay on the banks of Teesta for 48 hours continuously, are also saying, no more assurances, this time we want the share of Teesta water given by nature and the implementation of mega projects.
The main speaker at the seminar at 11 am was political analyst and Dhaka University teacher Abdullah Al Mamun. Asadul Habib Dulu, the chief coordinator of the movement to protect the Teesta River, also spoke.
Later, at 4 pm, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir addressed the rally as the chief guest. He said that on the one hand, India does not provide water, and on the other hand, they have given shelter to our enemy and kept him as a king in Delhi. Sitting there, he issued orders to the leaders and activists of Awami League. Hasina has fled the country and taken refuge in India.
He further said, when the Awami League government came to power, everyone thought – India’s friend seems to be able to bring water this time. They have sold the country in 15 years. They could not bring even a drop of water from Teesta. India has unilaterally extracted water by building dams upstream of 54 common rivers.
Fakhrul said to the interim government, “Tell India clearly that it must be given its fair share of Teesta.” Addressing India at this time, he also said, “If we want to be friends with the people of Bangladesh, we must first give them Teesta water, stop the border killings. No more grandstanding. Then there can be friendship.”
The meeting was chaired by District BNP President Asadul Habib Dulu, chief coordinator of the Teesta River Protection Movement and Organizing Secretary of the BNP Central Committee, and was attended by BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar Ahmed) Chairman Mustafa Jamal Haider, and Revolutionary Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Haque, among others.
Meanwhile, thousands of people from different places gathered on the banks of the Teesta River since morning to watch the public rally. By 3 pm, the bridge area was bustling with people.
Various cultural events including Bhavaiya, Pala Gaan, Jari Gaan, and drama have been held on the same stage since this evening.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is scheduled to address the program virtually tomorrow.
