BSS – Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today said the interim government will take initiatives to carry out those proposals of the Media Reform Commission, which are immediately implementable.

He made the remarks while the Media Reform Commission members handed over the report to him at the State Guest House Jamuna here.

The chief adviser said his government wants to quickly accomplish those reform proposals that can be implemented right now.

“So, I want the Reform Commission to quickly and separately present the recommendations to us that need to be accomplished immediately or can be implemented quickly,” he added.

Terming the works of the Media Reform Commission, led by senior journalist Kamal Ahmed, invaluable, Prof Yunus said that the report should be made available to other people, including students of journalism departments in universities, so that they can read it.

After receiving information from the commission that Bangladeshi television channels cannot be viewed abroad as those are forced to use a specific satellite, he said the government will take necessary steps so that Bangladeshis living abroad and interested foreigners can watch Bangladeshi TV channels.

“An 11-member team of the commission, led by its chief Kamal Ahmed, handed over the report to the chief adviser,” CA’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told a press briefing outside the State Guest House Jamuna this afternoon.

He said the report was discussed in detail during its handover ceremony.

Prof Yunus wanted to know about what reform initiatives should be taken immediately in media, he said.

The press secretary hoped that some reform initiatives could be taken in media soon.

Commission chief Kamal Ahmed and its members were present at the press briefing.

On November 18, the interim government formed the 11-member Media Reform Commission with an aim to make media independent, stronger and objective.

The other members in the commission are Gitiara Nasreen, professor at Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Dhaka; Shamsul Haque Zahid, editor of The Financial Express; Akhtar Hossain Khan, secretary of the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB); Syed Abdal Ahmed, former general secretary of the National Press Club; Fahim Ahmed, chief executive officer of Jamuna TV; Jimi Amir, journalist; Mostafa Shabuj, Bogura correspondent for The Daily Star; Titu Datta, deputy editor at The Business Standard; a representative from the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO); Abdullah Al Mamun, a student representative.
