The United Nations on Thursday hosted representatives of all registered political parties at its Dhaka office for a detailed briefing on its ongoing technical assistance to the Bangladesh Election Commission (BEC) ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary election.
During the session, the UN team outlined the major components of its electoral support, followed by an interactive question-and-answer segment with party delegates.
Under the BALLOT Project, the UN is assisting the BEC in strengthening its operational capacity, training electoral staff, enhancing voter and civic education, supplying essential election materials, and promoting wider inclusion in the electoral process. The initiative also focuses on ensuring information integrity throughout the election period.
According to the UN, all assistance is guided by fundamental United Nations principles—respect for Bangladesh’s sovereignty and national ownership, the promotion of human rights, and a firm commitment to impartiality, neutrality, and independence.
Launched in May 2025 at the Election Commission’s request, the BALLOT Project has played a significant role in updating the voter database. Nearly 8 million new voters have been added to the existing list of 120 million registered citizens. This includes 3.8 million men and over 4 million women, marking a notable step toward broader voter inclusion.
UN officials reiterated their continued support to Bangladesh in ensuring a credible, transparent, and participatory electoral process.
