Lalmonirhat :: A discussion meeting and folk cultural program have been organized in Lalmonirhat Sadar on the occasion of the 145th birth anniversary of Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, the pioneer of the women’s liberation movement and a pioneer of education.
The event was held on Tuesday (December 09, 2025) afternoon at the Sadar Upazila Hallroom under the joint initiative of Nuruldin-Bhasani Memorial Library and Samriddhi Lalmonirhat Mancha.
The main theme of the program was – ‘Sultana’s Dream’ and Rokeya’s Various Social Thoughts: The Fight of Our Time.’
The speakers in the discussion said that Begum Rokeya is not just a writer, she is one of the pioneers in spreading the light of women’s freedom and education in the subcontinent. Her writing ‘Sultana’s Dream’ is equally relevant today. Where she dreamed of awakening women’s power, scientific thinking and building a progressive society.
Ali Raihan Sarkar, Associate Professor, Begum Rokeya University, Sabina Reza Lisu, Lecturer (Retd.), Pairaband Begum Rokeya Memorial Degree College were present as discussants. They highlighted the modernity of Rokeya’s literature, the struggle against discrimination against women and the relevant aspects of her philosophy in the current society.
Rafiqul Islam, Sadiq Islam and Alamgir Sujan participated in the panel discussion. They said that the struggle for women’s empowerment and building a humane society along the path shown by Rokeya continues even today. They emphasize the practical application of Rokeya’s thoughts in all areas – family, education and state policy.
Sufi Mohammad and Shiv Sundar Barman coordinated the cultural performance of the event. Under their supervision, local artists performed folk music, poetry recitation and dance that were in line with Rokeya’s spirit and progressive ideology.
The entire event was coordinated by Deepak Kumar Roy, central executive member, Gana Sanghati Andolan. He said, “On Rokeya’s birthday, it is our responsibility to convey her values to the new generation.”
