DIGITAL SPY– Avatar: The Last Airbender has revealed a first look at season 2, confirming the appearance of a fan-favourite character.
The live-action series follows a young Avatar named Aang (Gordon Cormier), as he tries to master the four elements to save the world from the Fire Nation.
The Last Airbender was renewed for a second and third season earlier this year and now, Netflix has confirmed that season 2 production is officially underway.
The teaser video, which was unveiled at Netflix’s Geeked Week event, sees the dramatic introduction of the show’s newest character, an Earthbender named Toph Beifong.
Though the clip doesn’t show Toph’s face, her bare foot firmly stomps the ground, creating a ripple in the soil that only an Earthbender could command.
According to Deadline, Netflix launched an open casting call, encouraging blind and low vision Asian performers to try out for the part of the blind teen character. It has now been announced that Surfside Girls star Miya Cech will play the iconic role.
Toph was described as “sassy, confident and unfiltered” in the casting call. “For most of her life her, strength and formidable earthbending skills have been suppressed, but now on the run as the Avatar’s earthbending master, she is uninhibited to become the fierce warrior she believes she is inside,” the description noted.
The series also features key characters such as Aang’s companions Katara (played by Kiawentiio) and Sokka (played by Ian Ousley), and antagonists Prince Zuko (played by Dallas Liu) and Fire Lord Ozai (played by Daniel Dae Kim).
A release date for Avatar: The Last Airbender season two has not yet been confirmed.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is available to stream now on Netflix.
