Bablu Ranjan Biswas, Kushtia :: A helpless mother held a press conference demanding justice for the murder of a housewife in Mirpur, Kushtia.
On Monday morning, mother Shahida Khatun held a press conference demanding justice for the murder of her daughter Sumaiya Akhter at a local restaurant in front of the main gate of the Mirpur Upazila Parishad in the district. Shahida Khatun is the wife of Shahazul Islam, an expatriate from Dhuboil village.
In a written statement on behalf of Shahida Khatun, her younger daughter Cynthia Khatun said in a crowded press conference that Sumaiya was killed due to dowry and physical torture. On January 7, 2023, she was married to Akram Hossain, son of Nabiuddin of Swarupdaha village in Poradaha union, as a family. Since marriage, Akram Hossain had been mentally and physically torturing Sumaiya on the demand for dowry.
He claimed in a press conference that he was tortured to death on March 27. After the murder, Akram Hossain called his mother-in-law at 2 am and said, “Sumaiya is sick, come quickly.” As soon as Shahida Khatun got the news, she went to her son-in-law’s house with her relatives and saw her daughter Sumaiya’s body lying on the floor of the house. At that time, she claimed that Sumaiya had bruises on various parts of her body. When she reported the matter to the local police station, they refused to take up the murder case. As a result, a murder case was filed against son-in-law Akram Hossain, father-in-law Nabiuddin and mother-in-law Afroza Khatun in the Mirpur Amli Court of the learned Senior Judicial Magistrate of Kushtia. The case number is Mirpur Gr-112/25. She demanded justice for the murder from the concerned authorities at the press conference.
